Couple attempts suicide over alleged land 'take-over'

A couple today attempted to commit suicide in the district Collectorate premises here, alleging inaction by police on a complaint about 'take-over' of their land by a big tea estate management in the Nilgiris district.
Police said the two, who consumed some pesticide, have been admitted to the government hospital here.
The couple came to the Collectorate on 'grievances day' to submit a petition about the alleged land acquisition. Suddenly, they consumed pesticide from bottles they carried.
Noticing this on CCTV, police personnel and Collectorate staff rushed to the spot and took them immediately to the hospital.
According to the preliminary inquiry, the couple, holding a small piece of land located near Pykara, 40 km from here, were upset after learning that a big tea industry had put up a fence around it, police said.
