CPI General Secretary Sudhakar Reddy today expressed surprise over Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at her residence, saying "there should be some dignity and decorum."
"It is a surprise, a Prime Minister goes to a Chief Minister's residence, there should be some dignity," he said.
"If it is a political meeting I understand, yes, BJP leaders meeting AIADMK leaders, but a Prime Minister meeting a Chief Minister...There should be some dignity and decorum, he should have asked Jayalalithaa to come to Raj Bhavan to meet him," Reddy told reporters here.
He was referring to Modi's August 7 visit to Poes Garden residence of Jayalalithaa after presiding over the National Handloom Day celebrations here.
Reddy said "He (Modi) wants the support of AIADMK in Parliament, particularly in the Rajya Sabha and Jayalalithaa needs his support."
During the 50-minute meeting, Modi reportedly sought AIADMK support in Parliament, while Jayalalithaa raised several pending demands of the state. She gave a memorandum to Modi, urging the Centre to form the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee.
Among other issues, she also sought deployment of Central Industrial Security Force to guard Mullaperiyar dam in Kerala.
Asserting that BJP should not be allowed political space in Tamil Nadu, nourished by the ideology of reformist leaders like E V Ramasamy Naicker, he said "the people of Tamil Nadu are politically conscious and they should continue to hold high the hoary political values cherished by such leaders."
Flagging the issue of "rise in prices of food grains and essential commodities like cooking oil and vegetables," he flayed Modi by asking "do you remember a single occasion when he spoke about controlling price rise,?" Reddy asked.
He said his party would continue to fight on all such issues.
