CPI(M) strongman Majid Master was today arrested while leading a political procession at Sashon area in North 24 Parganas district.
Police sources said he was arrested, along with some of his associates on charge of fuelling tension in the area in the wake of the damage caused to a party office a day back.
As Majid Master, alias Majid Ali, led a rally of slogan-shouting party activists at Beliaghata village of Sashon this evening, he was taken away by police.
The CPI(M) rally was brought out in protest against ransack of the party office last evening which the Marxists said was the handwork of Trinamool Congress activists.
Trinamool, however, denied the charge saying some CPI(M) activists themselves damaged the office to frame the ruling party and instigate trouble in the area.
Majid Master, an important party leader in North 24 Parganas district, had many criminal cases pending against him and had earlier been arrested and released on bail.
He was also an accused in the murder of Trinamool supporter Noor Ali Mollah at village Madri on October 27,2009.
Several party offices were rampaged in the district and elsewhere in West Bengal following the heckling of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Finance Minister Amit Mitra by demonstrating SFI activists in New Delhi last Tuesday.
