Several CPI(ML) Liberation activists were arrested today after they tried to violate the ban on holding meeting and procession at the iconic College Square in the city, the police said.
The CPI(ML) Liberation today organized a march from Moulali to College square and a law-violation programme to boot to protest against the state government's decision.
They were asked to stop after they forcibly tried to enter the College Square. After they tried to use force, we stopped them and arrested several activists. A total of 46 male and 8 female were arrested," a Kolkata police official said.
CPI(ML) Liberation state secretary Partha Ghosh was among those arrested by the police.
"At the Centre the BJP government has imposed an undeclared emergency and at the state the TMC government is just doing the same. In democracy everybody has the right to hold peaceful protest, and College Square is a symbol of protest against oppression," Ghosh said while addressing the protest-rally.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had last week said that meetings and processions would not be allowed any more at College Square because it disturbed students of educational institutions situated around the lake.
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, College Street and College Square were synonymous with the Naxalite movement as several students of Presidency College and Calcutta University joined the armed struggle.
