The CPI today nominated its senior leader and former Kerala minister Binoy Viswam as a candidate for the biennial election to the Rajya Sabha from the state.
The decision to field Viswam was taken at the party state executive meeting held here.
CPI state secretary Kannam Rajendran were among those who participated in the meeting, a party release said.
Viswam was a forest minister in the LDF government headed by CPI-M veteran V S Achuthanandan in 2006-2011.
The ruling LDF has decided to share between coalition partners-- CPI-M and CPI--one seat each of the two 'winnable' Rajya Sabha seats of the three that falls vacant by this month end.
Congress leader and Rajya Sabha deputy chairman P J Kurian, CPI-M leader C P Narayanan and Joy Abraham of the Kerala Congress are retiring on July 1.
