Accusing Trinamool Congress government of failing to check terror cells in West Bengal, CPI(M) on Monday said the NIA probe and visits by top officials, including the National Security Advisor (NSA), would not have been necessary had the state police done its job.

"Had the state government and the police, which is under it, done their job properly, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe or the visits by top officials from the Centre would not have taken place," CPI(M) Politburo member Biman Basu told reporters here.

"The state government's role has been a big zero. How can they not be aware of what all has been happening right under their nose? The way evidences have been collected by the NIA in the Burdwan blast case shows that the police has not done its job at all," Basu said.

His comments came on a day when security and intelligence chiefs of the country, including NSA Ajit Doval, assessed the progress of probe into the Burdwan blast and visited the site.

The blast on October 2 at Khagragarh in Burdwan town had claimed the lives of two suspected terrorists of Jamaat-ul- Mujahideen Bangladesh.
