Haryana Congress president Kumari Selja on Saturday alleged that the crime against women are on rise in the state under a "totally incompetent" government.
"The present state government is totally incompetent and has failed on all fronts, especially on the law and order front. Crimes against women in the state are increasing day by day, but the government is not taking any concrete step to ensure women's safety," Selja alleged.
The Bharatiya Janata Party formed government on its own for the first time in 2014, but falling short of majority in the 2019 assembly polls, it formed the government with the support of Jannayak Janta Party.
"Ever since the BJP came to power (in 2014), there has been a huge increase in cases of crime against women in the state," she claimed.
She said according to 2015 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 9,511 cases of crime against women were registered.
"This increased to 9,839 in 2016, and in the year 2017, this figure increased to 11,370," she said.
Selja said "if we talk about rape cases, then according to the NCRB data, 1,099 such cases were reported in the year 2017."
The senior Congress leader said "on one hand crimes against women were increasing in the state and on the other hand, not utilising the funds received for the women's safety clearly shows the government was not serious about women safety at all."
