Security is being beefed up -- with additional mobile jammers and forces -- for the annual Amarnath pilgrimage in the South Kashmir Himalayas starting on June 29 this year, a senior CRPF officer said.
"Besides routine security measures, extra forces along with new gadgets including 20 mobile jammers and some static jammers will be put in place to ensure a peaceful Amarnath Yatra this year," Inspector General (IG) CRPF A V Chouhan told reporters today.
Jammers are used to block mobile signals to disable the use of cell phones, which are often the mode of communication in militant attacks.
With protests spilling out to the streets of Kashmir this summer, extra troops will be deployed all along the highway from Pathankot to the Jawahar Tunnel.
He said patrolling parties would be equipped with the "latest gadgets" to meet any untoward situation. "Although we are still in the planning stage we will deploy extra force depending on the situation in Srinagar," the officer said.
Troop deployment and intelligence on the highway would be strengthened, he said.
"We are going to take care of each and every yatri," he said.
Beside the Amarnath yatra, the IG CRPF, on a day-long visit to Kishtwar and Bhadarwah, also discussed with security agencies arrangements for the forthcoming yatra season, which includes the Kailash Yatra, Manimahesh Yatra, Trishul Bhaint Yatra and Machail Yatra.
The Amarnath pilgrimage will begin on June 29 and conclude on August 7. Over 1.30 lakh pilgrims have been registered for this year's yatra.
