"Immediate steps should be taken to assure the people of Northeastern origin of their safety and security wherever they are residing. The state governments and administration should take prompt measures for this," the CPI(M) Politburo said in a statement here.
It said the recent violence in the Bodoland territorial region in Assam "has localised reasons and any attempts to rouse feelings in other parts of the country should be firmly curbed."
Asking the people to "foil any move to disturb amity amongst the people and maintain unity and peace", it said the movement of Northeastern citizens from Bangalore and some other places were "sparked off by rumours or alleged threats".
A large number of panic-stricken people from the Northeast have fled Bangalore over the last two days after reports of attacks on some of them.
