Andhra Pradesh government has said that extreme events like cyclones, tsunami, sand scarcity, sea level rise and human interventions are some of the reasons for erosion of sea coast in the state.
"The reasons as given by the National Institute of Ocean Technology, Chennai are wave climate, extreme events (cyclones, tsunami and depressions), sand scarcity, human interventions, sea level rise and tectonics," the government said in a written reply in Legislative Assembly to a question on erosion of sea coast.
The government has constituted a committee (of experts) for a detailed study to analyse the reasons for the beach erosion and to take up short and long term measures, the reply said.
The phenomenon of beach erosion, especially in the port city of Visakhapatnam in recent months, has caused concern.
In January this year, a small portion of the Beach Road in Visakhapatnam caved in under the impact of sea waves. The road was cordoned off to prevent any untoward incident as visitors and tourists throng the place in large numbers.
The incident, preceded by powerful waves rocking the coast, had caused panic among local residents.
The government reply to a query said damages have occurred due to erosion of sea coast.
