She was conferred D.Litt at the 10th convocation of the university yesterday.
Goel is currently Emeritus UGC Professor in Sanskrit at Punjab University, Chandigarh.
She has 40 years of experience in teaching Sanskrit and Indian philosophy and has authored 25 research books and published more than 85 research papers in Indian and foreign journals, a university release said.
She was also invited by Chulalongkon University, Bangkok (Thailand) for delivering lectures on Indian culture.
Punjab University has nominated Goel as a councillor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for a five year period.
Other awardees include Ghazal king Anup Jalota and eminent classical dancer Dr Saraswati Sundararesan.
