Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal today sought strict laws against NRI men abandoning their Indian brides.
She also batted for an NRI commission at the national level to safeguard the rights of such women.
"If today a man abandons his bride and flees the country, it is very difficult to get him back. This is why we need stringent rules," she told reporters here.
Maliwal said such cases were frequently reported from places like Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Karnal and Hisar in Haryana.
She also asked the Haryana Women Commission to provide details of such fraud cases in the name of NRI marriages.
The DCW chief said that she was part of an expert committee set up by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to solve NRI marriage disputes.
She said that like Punjab, other states should also have NRI commissions, which are as "powerful" as the Human Rights Commission.
"There should be an NRI commission at the national level and all NRI marriages should be registered with it," she added.
