Taking a serious note of the rising cases of rape of children in the national capital, DCW chairperson Swati Maliwal today sought an appointment with Delhi Chief Secretary K K Sharma to discuss measures to tackle the problem.
"As you are aware, Delhi is recording an increasing number of rape cases, especially of children. In the past one and half months, there have been over 130 cases of rape. Out of this, over 50 are of children, two of whom were barely 1 year old.
"The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) is aware that 'publicorder' does not fall within the jurisdiction of the Delhi government. However, in addition to child rapes being a matter of serious criminalconcern, it is also a socio-psychological and demographic phenomenon," Maliwal said in a letter.
"In order to abate thesame, we hope for a systemic change and the Commission wishes to work closely with the Delhi government in this regard. I wish to meet you in order to take this forward," she said.
The DCW chief wished to know thesteps taken or proposed by the AAP-led government to tackle the issue.
Maliwal also met a four-year-old girl who was raped in the city recently. The child had to undergo a major surgery as the assault left her internal organs damaged. She is admitted in the intensive care unit of AIIMS.
