A deaf and dumb girl was allegedly raped by her instructor at a vocational centre in the state capital, police said today.
The 20-year-old girl from Baripada in Mayurbhanj district is a student of radio repair work at central government-run Vocational Rehabilitation Centre for the Handicapped (VRCH) in Pokhariput area here, police said.
On August 6, an instructor at the centre allegedly took the girl, who was down with fever, to his residence promising her better healthcare and raped her several times.
He threatened her of dire consequences if she informed about the incident to anyone and dropped her at her hostel.
Though the girl was initially scared, she later revealed her ordeal to a batch-mate. The students took up the matter with an association of deaf and dumb which then lodged a complaint with the police.
But the matter caught media's attention only last night after the incident sparked protests by BJP and Congress supporters outside a Mahila police station here.
The accused has been arrested from a lodge at Barmunda area, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Nitinjeet Singh said today.
The incident comes in the wake of continuing demand for resignation of chief minister Naveen Patnaik by the opposition Congress and BJP over rising crime against women.
In June this year, a visually challenged minor girl was allegedly raped and killed in Beladala village in Puri.
