A decision on enacting a legislation against 'honour killing' will be taken after considering comments of all states and Union territories and holding wider consultations with stakeholders, the government said today.

In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Law and Justice Minister D V Sadananda Gowda said so far 27 states/UTs have sent their comments on the 242nd Report of the Law Commission on "Prevention of Interference with the Freedom of Matrimonial Alliances (in the name of Honour and Tradition), 2012".

"After considering the comments of all the state governments/Union territory administrations and having wider consultations with the stakeholders, a policy decision to enact the legislation on the subject will be taken," he said.

Asked about the time-frame by when the legislation will be finalised, the Minister said the legislative department of the Law Ministry had sought comments/views of states/UTs on the report and the response of some states was still awaited.

"It may not be possible to fix any time-frame in this regard," he said.

The Minister added that among the states which have submitted their views on the Law Commission report are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and all Union territory administrations.
