Decrease in number of domestic violence cases in last 3 years

There is a steady decrease in the number of cases registered under the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act in the last three years, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
According to the provisional data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), a total number of 16,351, 4,204 and 531 cases have been registered under the Protection of Women Against Domestic Violence Act, 2005 in 2012, 2013 and 2014, respectively, Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi told the Lok Sabha in a written reply today.
Stating that the safety of women in the country is of utmost priority for the Government, she said that the ministry is endeavouring to put in place effective mechanism to provide safe environment for women to work, live and fulfil their potential.

"Ministry recongises that incidence of violence against women cannot be controlled unless mindset of people, in general, is made to change," the Minister said, adding that continuous awareness creation among men and women in the society through workshops, seminars, street plays, Nari Ki Chaupals and Beti Janmotshav are being undertaken at the district level.
