School children in Delhi are set to get an exclusive space to promote their talent and create interest in the indigenous fields of music, art and culture in the coming months.
"Currently, we have six Academies and the Sahitya Kala Parishad that regularly organise cultural events to depict our culture. Now, our government would like to establish a Children's Academy that would work with students from over 4,000 to 5,000 private and government schools through workshops to further groom their talents," Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said after unveiling a cultural calendar for the upcoming year.
Details of the new institution aimed to promote spirit of art and culture among the schoolchildren of the capital will be announced soon, she said.
The 'Delhi Celebrates' calendar has been put together by the Delhi government and the Department of Art, Culture and Languages. It lists events from June 2013 to May 2014. This year, the calender booklets have been released in Hindi too.
"As Delhi is the mixture of all languages and cultures, it becomes the face of the nation. By launching the calender, people will know what are we doing to promote art and culture in the capital," Dikshit said.
Events in the lineup include the richness of Hindi theatre to the charm of Punjabi poetry to the rhythm of Thumri and events that aim to "celebrate the neglected art by the youth and encourage them to it forward."
"Each year a huge number of artists from all corners of the country fill Delhi with colour, music, dance, drama, flavor and fervour for the Delhi Celebrates series of event. The event series organised to add to the festivities of Delhi - the cultural capital of the country, has succeeded far beyond anyone's imagination," she said.
At the same event, Secretary of Art, Culture and Languages Department, Sajan Singh Yadav said, "Delhi has emerged as the cultural capital and number of programmes have increased over the years. Our calender is a reflection of the unbelievable diversity of our land."
The unveiling of the calender in the presence of Minister of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development and Languages, Kiran Walia was followed by a santoor duet recital by Pandit Bhajan Sapori and Abhay Sopori.
