According to the plan, the government will examine emissions of 100 vehicles each in the two age categories.
The move comes after truckers claimed that their vehicles, which have fitness certificates, do not cause much pollution and their emission are within the limit.
"Government has decided to conduct a random checking of diesel-run vehicles which are 5 years and 10 years old in the presence of NGT-appointed commissioners and environmentalists.
"We will examine the pollution emissions of 100 10 years old and 5 years old such vehicles, each. By doing this, we will be able to study the actual status of pollution emissions of these types of vehicles," a senior government official said.
All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) president Bhim Wadhwa that government should not impound vehicles on the basis of age parameter, instead it should take action on pollution emissions.
The official also said that transport minister Gopal Rai would hold a public-hearing on April 28 for truckers.
"In order to hear the problems of truckers, a public hearing of the transport minister has been called on April 28. Besides, a joint meeting of the transport department, police, municipal corporations will also be held soon," the official said.
