Delhi govt trains 110 volunteers to inspect shelter homes

The Delhi government has trained over 100 volunteers to carry out inspections of shelter homes in various parts of the city, in the wake of death of six homeless persons on the streets allegedly due to cold.
There are at present 210 shelter homes run by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board.
The 110 volunteers which include office goers, business professionals and college students have been given a complete check list.
The list includes checking the availability of basic amenities like drinking water facility, separate toilets for men and women, cleanliness, blankets along with others.
The volunteers also need to check if the control room number of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board is pasted on the walls of the shelter homes.

Each volunteer has been assigned two shelter homes.

Urban Development Minister Manish Sisodia asked people to live in shelter homes rather than staying out in the open in the cold.
Delhi government has ordered an inquiry into the death of six homeless persons in Nigambodh Ghat area in Yamuna Pushta yesterday.
Sisodia, who ordered the inquiry, said,"It is a very unfortunate incident. Despite shelter homes being there in various parts of the city, people are forced to live in open in this freezing cold."
He also visited the 11 existing shelter homes in the area where the deaths took place on Saturday evening.
