The Delhi government today said it had already paid its share of amount for construction of Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways, which aims to decongest the roads of national capital, and won't pay more money for completion of the project.
In a letter to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, Delhi PWD Minister Satyendra Jain said that three concerned states -- Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana -- were to share the cost of construction in the ratio of 50:25:25 respectively.
"The original cost of the project was Rs 844 crore, which has escalated to Rs 3589.56 crore after four revisions. Initially, Delhi's share was Rs 422 crore and Delhi paid its share upto the 1st revision of cost i.E. Rs 653.50 crore within the prescribed time i.E. 2006," Jain said.
The PWD minister met Gadkari on the issue of Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways and discussed the several points, including funding to these projects.
"I am glad that you (Gadkari) agreed to our demand and accepted that Government of NCT of Delhi won't have to pay any more amount now. I will now request you to kindly expedite the implementation of both the projects," Jain said in his letter.
He also said that as discussed in the meeting and reiterated several times by the earlier correspondences of Lt Governor to your good self in the past one year, the city's government has very limited sources of revenue to meet the continuous escalation in the cost of the project and asking for our share beyond the original was not possible for Delhi.
The two expressways -- each about 135 km long -- were planned in 2006 following a Supreme Court order to form a ring road outside Delhi for channelling non-Delhi bound traffic to bypass the national capital.
Eastern Peripheral Expressway envisages to provide signal-free connectivity between Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gautam Budh Nagar (Greater Noida) and Palwal while the Western Expressway connects Kundli to Palwal via Manesar in Haryana.
