With common people facing major hardships due to paucity of cash in the wake of the demonetisation move, Congress in Madhya Pradesh toady set up stalls outside some banks and served refreshments to those standing in long queues.
"We had put some stalls in front of banks in the state capital, including Jahangirabad and Bairagarh localities, and served water and tea to people, especially senior citizens," said Congress district president and state unit party general secretary PC Sharma.
Long queues have been seen outsides banks since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced scrapping of banknotes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 to curb black money. Banks remained open today to cater to the huge rush of people who wanted to either withdraw/deposit their money or get the defunct denominations exchanged for lower value legal tender.
Sharma said Congress members helped old and illiterate people to fill up requisite forms to get their demonetised money exchanged at the banks.
State Congress chief spokesman KK Mishra said, "We have been informed officially by our cadres that around 35 such camps were put up at different districts outside Bhopal."
Mishra said such stalls may continue till the banking system is back to normal.
Blaming the BJP-led Central government for the plight of people post demonetisation move, he said that common people, especially poor and farmers are run out of money and running from the pillar to post for cash.
