Bhagyashree Mutha, a second-year student of Bachelor of Dental Science course at Nair Hospital Dental College hanged herself in her hostel room this morning, police said.
The incident came to light at around 1 pm when her friends found that she had locked the door from inside and wasn't responding to their calls, said Dilip Ugale, senior police inspector attached to the Kalachowki police station.
Police broke open the door and found her body hanging from the ceiling fan, the officer said.
Mutha, who hailed from Ichalkaranji in western Maharashtra, was apparently depressed as she was finding it difficult to cope with the studies, he said.
Further probe was on.
