Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association had yesterday passed a resolution condemning the lynching of a 50-year-old Muslim man in a Dadri village by a mob over rumours that he had eaten beef.
The resolution said the incident was a "grim pointer to the fact that no one is safe anymore anywhere in the country".
"The Centre and state governments have abdicated their constitutional responsibility of protecting the life and property of common citizens especially those belonging to minorities," it said.
"If this propaganda of hate which includes distorted presentation of history was allowed to grow unchecked then the very concept of an India based on the ideals of Gandhi would be under serious threat," he warned.
The silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue is "shocking", he said, adding that "all development programmes, including Clean India, would be rendered useless if our minds are not clean and a culture of violence is allowed to prevail in the country.
