Former Himachal chief minister and leader of the opposition P K Dhumal today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh following successive defeats in elections since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the latest being the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) polls.
"The people have repeatedly given their verdict and made clear what they want. The chief minister should honour the verdict and resign on moral grounds," he told mediapersons after the election of BJP candidates as the mayor and deputy mayor of the SMC.
"The ruling Congress lost all four Lok Sabha seats in 2014, suffered defeat in Bhoranj and Sujanpur assembly by- elections and now in SMC and the message is loud and clear," he said.
He said the BJP had secured 53.8 record per cent votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and the had Congress trailed even in Shimla (rural) constituency represented by chief minister.
"The BJP won in three wards out of four in Shimla (rural) in the Shimla Municipal Corporation elections and took a total lead of 655 votes in this segment," he said.
He said the Congress government had earlier said that the SMC poll were semi-finals to the Assembly polls but was back- tracking.
He said the Modi wave will finally lead the BJP to victory in the coming assembly polls in Himachal Pradesh.
