Bharatanatyam dancer Rama Vaidyanathan kicked off the Divinity Series festival here with evocative performances that aimed to showcase the divine in every human being.
The inaugural function of the three-day festival, which began last evening, was attended by Union HRD Minister M M Pallam Raju and was simultaneously beamed live on Doordarshan's DD Bharti channel as well as webcasted on Facebook.
Conceptualised by acclaimed Bharatanatyam exponent and choreographer Jyotsana Shourie and corporate veteran husband Deepak Shourie, the inaugural event of the Divinity Series showcases three Bharatanatyam dancers- Rama Vaidyanathan, Meenakshi Srinivasan and Mythili Prakash.
"The idea was born as we could our effort to promote Indian culture. We believe a large and growing population of younger people, the young generation who are interested in this field of divinity but do not get opportunities. We are telecasting across the world live on Facebook web streaming and on DD Bharti, our partners," Deepak Shourie said.
"We believe that this opportunity to reach out to young generation will give this cultural divinity series a major boost," he said.
The evening's programme began with an invocation by a choir from the Gandhrava school of music followed by "Mayur Alarippu" by Rama Vaidyanathan, who tried to capture the movement dynamic of the peacock in her first dance.
