A DMK functionary attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation near the party district head quarters here today, for denying him ticket to contest the coming local body polls, even as 50 party workers staged a protest by covering their mouths with black clothes.
The 53rd ward division secretary, Murugesan (45) came to the party office near Coimbatore North Fly over and suddenly doused himself with kerosene.
Even before he attempted to light match stick, he was overpowered by some party workers and police, present there.
Some 50 party workers, majority of them being women, squatted on the corridor of the office and raised slogans against the selection of the candidate for the ward, police said.
Even as the list of candidates were released two days ago, there was resentment among the party workers in some of the wards.
Senior party leaders are discussing the matter with them, they said.
Similarly, a woman, Kalaivani had also attempted self-immolation yesterday near the party office for denying ticket to party division secretary Muthalagan in 21st ward.
However, party workers had foiled her attempt.
