Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi on Saturday said the vacant posts of doctors will be filled directly from the medical college campuses in the next one year.

He said the NDA government is going to open 11 new medical colleges in the state.

"Vacant posts of doctors will be directly filled from the medical college campuses in the next one year," he said while inaugurating a conference of cardiologists here.

He held the Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi led RJD dispensations responsible for the shortage of doctors, nurses and para-medical staff as no new medical and nursing college were opened then.

The intake of medical colleges of the state will go up to 1400 from the current academic session, he said.

The deputy chief minister said Tamil Nadu has 49 medical colleges and has one doctor for 253 people, while Bihar has 13 medical colleges and has a doctor-population ratio of 1:3207.

As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard, there should be one doctor per every 1000 people, he said adding that Delhi has a doctor-population ratio of 3:1000.

The MBBS course have already started in IGIMS, Patna, Bettiah (West Champaran) and Pawapuri (Nalanda), Modi said.

Medical colleges at Purnea, Chapra (Saran) and Madhepura are under construction while tendering process has been floated for the construction of medical college and hospitals at Vaishali, Begusarai, Sitamarhi, Jhanjharpur, and Buxar.

Private medical colleges are currently functional at Katihar, Kishanganj and Rohtas in the state while the government has given its nod to open such medical colleges at Saharsa and Madhubani, Modi said.
