Doctor caught for conducting sex-determination test in UP

Director of a private nursing home was caught 'red-handed' while allegedly conducting sex- determination tests during a sting operation by the district authorities, city magistrate said today.
The nursing home was also sealed yesterday after the director were caught taking Rs 5,000 for the illegal activity, city magistrate Vijay Kumar said.
We had been receiving information on sex determination going on in some private hospitals. We selected four such hospitals and conducted a sting, said Kumar, adding that the one out of four was caught 'red-handed.'
He said that with the cooperation of health department, some Anganwadi workers were sent with women disguised as customers to the four suspected hospitals.
The first three hospitals refused to conduct ultrasound for the purpose, however, the director of the private hospital in Chandrapuri Colony of Dhaulipiyau area agreed to conduct the ultrasound for Rs 5,000, Kumar said.
He said that the director, Doctor Manju Saxena, not only conducted the ultrasound but also told the woman that she had a female child and advised her to abort the foetus.
The Anganwadi worker immediately called the team headed by ACMO Rajendra Singh and Deputy CMO Sukesh Gupta, Kumar said.
He said that the accused doctor did not even ask the patient to fill in the consent form for ultrasound.
Amount tendered for ultrasound was also seized and the investigation is underway, Kumar said.
