A doctor and a middleman were arrested today for allegedly conducting a sex determination test at a private ultrasound centre in Yamunanagar.
In a joint operation launched by district administrations of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Yamunanagar in Haryana, the teams also seized an unauthorised portable ultrasound machine, a laptop and other equipment.
The doctor identified as Shakeel allegedly used to conduct sex determination tests at an ultrasound centre in Yamunanagar and Amit Kumar, who worked at a private clinic at Sarsawa in Uttar Pradesh, used to bring patients to him for tests, an official release said here.
Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner, S S Phuliya had recieved complaints about the illegal tests being carried out, it said.
To verify the complaints, Phuliya constituted a team to verify the complaints. The team sent a decoy patient to clinic in Sarsawa (near Yamunanagar) where Amit Kumar asked for Rs 10,000 to conduct sex determination test and for aborting the foetus.
It was finally decided that the patient would pay only Rs 8,000 and he accompanied the patient in a vehicle to the ultrasound centre in Yamunanagar.
As the help of the Saharanpur administration was also sought in the entire operation, the teams of Yamunanagar and Saharanpur kept following the information given by the decoy patient.
The patient made a call through his mobile phone to the concerned authorities and the teams heard the conversation between Kumar, Shakeel and the patient and they recorded it.
As soon as the doctor received Rs 8,000 through Kumar and started the process of the test, both the teams reached the spot and arrested them, the release said.
An FIR was lodged at police station, Qutubsher in Saharanpur under PNDT Act, it added.
Yamunanagar district administration is keeping a vigil on ultrasound centres in adjacent areas and those found indulging in illegal practices would invite stern action, it said.
