When the police intercepted a luxury car carrying poppy husk on Tuesday, they had no clue that the trail would lead to a woman controller of the gang.
On Wednesday, when the investigation led them to a swanky house in a posh colony, belonging to Sumita Bishnoi (37), who had been controlling the illicit trade with the help of a high-tech GPS system from a room in the house, members of the police team were taken aback by her "lavish" lifestyle.
The police have arrested Bishnoi and five of her accomplices from the house and seized three vehicles, while a hunt was on to nab the kingpin of the racket, Rajuram Iram, he added.
An automatic currency note counting machine, a vacuum cleaner, used for cleaning the vehicles post delivery of consignments, and loads of documents have also been seized, said the ACP.
Soon, she came into contact with Iram, who was a drugs and liquor smuggler.
"Gradually, they developed a rapport and she became Iram's partner in smuggling, ignoring her husband who subsequently left for Chennai for some work," the police said.
She mastered the tricks of the trade and emerged as the controller of the entire network with the help of technology after some of the gang members were arrested.
"We have been interrogating her and we hope to make a bigger breakthrough soon," said DCP (West) Sameer Singh.
He also ruled out the possibility that such a huge network could be run without the help or involvement of some policemen or officials.
Bishnoi was living in the house with her two sons and father-in-law.
Both her sons study in a prominent school of Jodhpur.
