ASP Vipin Tada said that a regular checking of vehicles is being conducted at various points on highways to curb smuggling of drugs.
A special crack team formed at Sahibabad police station under Inspector Upendra Yadav signaled a fast approaching car to stop at Aradhana cinema T point on GT Road around 6 PM for checking.
The car driver halted the vehicle 50 yards before the police check barrier.
The driver and two other occupants of the car tried to flee from the spot but they were caught by the police.
During interrogation, Gyanendra and his wife Babita, both natives of Meerut district, said that 510 grams of methaqualone powder used for making Mandrax tablets was stacked inside the dashboard of the car.
The woman confessed that she works as conduit in drug supply chain and the trio was on their way to Connaught Place in Delhi to hand over the consignment to a Nigerian national.
