Delhiites today got some respite from the intense heat after few parts of the city experienced dust storms which brought down the temperature.
The temperature which had been registered at 42.6 deg C earlier in the day dropped to 36.4 deg C in the evening after dust storms were witnessed in areas neighbouring IGI and Safdarjung airports.
"Dust storm of moderate intensity, with the wind speed of 48 and 40 kms per hour, hit Delhi at Safdarjung and IGI airports at 3.46 PM and 4.10 PM respectively.
"The dust storm caused fall in temperature to 36.4 deg C by 5.30 PM both at IGI and Safdarjung airport areas. Just in one hour, there was a fall of almost six to seven deg C compared to 42.4 and 42.6 deg C respectively," said R K Jenamani, Airport MeT official.
Earlier in the day, the maximum temperature was registered at 42.6 deg C which was a slight decrease from last week's 45.7 deg C, the highest for the month of May in a decade.
The MeT officials, however, dubbed the decrease as a temporary respite following a western disturbance affecting Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Temperatures may rise once again towards the last week of May once this subsides, the officials said.
The minimum temperature stood at 30.2 deg C, which was three notches above normal and one degree above yesterday's 30.5 deg C.
The weather department predicted a partly cloudy sky with possibility of dust storms or thunderstorms in some areas within the next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures is expected to be around 44 deg C and 30 deg C tomorrow.
