Duty officer manhandled, police vehicle damaged at Santragachi

Agitated with alleged police pressure on members of a family in Howrah district, locals targetted Santragachi police station last night during which a duty officer was manhandled and police vehicle damaged.
A police official said trouble started after a woman, a resident of Sahebpara in Rail Colony, lodged a complaint with the police that her husband had deserted her and not allowing her to stay at his residence.
After the police reached her husband's house, there was an altercation between him and the police after which the man and his mother fell sick, the official said.
As the news spread, locals assembled in front of Santragachi police station and started demonstrating complaining of police torture on the man, against whom his wife had lodged the complaint.

They stormed the police station at 11.30 PM and manhandled the duty officer and damaged a police vehicle, the official said.
Thirteen people were today detained for interrogation in this connection, he said.
