Union Coal and Power Minister Piyush Goyal today rubbished West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's claims that the Damodar Valley Corporation was responsible for the recent floods in the state.
"I have investigated the water flow from DVC because there was some concern expressed that some floods had resulted because of the corporation. We have done a complete study of that and I am happy to inform that the DVC did not release any additional water," Goyal said on the sidelines of a programme organised by the BCC&I here.
According to Goyal, there is a body comprising DVC officials, representatives of West Bengal government and other riparian states.
"The body decides how much water has to be released in different points of times based on everybody's interest and technical issues and DVC has stuck to that," Goyal added.
Stating that dredging was "necessary", Banerjee had said, "Bengal is suffering because of DVC, which is overflowing. Dredging is necessary. DVC needs to modernise and dredging needs to be done. DVC is releasing excessive water and I had spoken to Piyush Goyal on this.
