East Godavari in Andhra Pradesh has become the first district in the country to be fully equipped with LED street lights.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu made a formal declaration in this regard on the occasion of Panchayat Raj Divas at Dwarapudi in East Godavari this afternoon.

Around 3.1 lakh LED street lights have been installed in the district that would result in saving of 34 million units of power annually, Naidu said.

He wanted the Panchayat Raj Department to complete installation of over 28 lakh LED street lights in the remaining 12 districts as well that could lead to a saving of 333 million units of power annually and also ease the financial burden on the rural local bodies.

Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Nara Lokesh said of the total 50 lakh LED street lights installed in the country, the state accounted for 11.61 lakh.

As the 'Run Rate Mechanism' adopted by his department for implementation of the LED street lighting programme yielded good results in East Godavari, it was being adopted in other districts also.

The state occupies a premier position in implementation of energy efficiency programmes.
