"Eight home guards have been arrested in connection with yesterday's incident and FIRs have been lodged against 1,500 unidentified persons at the Hasangan police station," IG (Crime) Ashish Gupta told reporters.
Armed with lathis, thousands of home guards had attacked policemen deployed there and chased them, besides damaging a number of vehicles, Gupta said.
Police then resorted to a lathicharge to control them.
Efforts are being made to arrest those involved in the clash, he added.
