An 80-year-old woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Udhagamandalam in nearby Nilgiris district early today, police said.
Chinnakarupayi was standing in front of her house, when the attack took place, they said.
On receiving information, officials from the forest and police departments rushed to the spot and conducted inquiry, they added.
In another incident, a herd of elephants damaged two houses and a compound wall in a village near Mettupalayam near here in the small hours today.
