Elders laud bravery by Assam teen in rescuing school kids
Press Trust of India New Delhi Members in Rajya Sabha today praised the exemplary courage displayed by a 14-year-old girl in Assam, Gunjan Sarmah, who offered herself to be kidnapped to save school kids from unidentified gunmen in Sibsagar district.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Birendra Kumar Baishya (AGP) said the girl rescued 12 school kids, kidnapped by extremists at gun point in a hijacked school van by offering herself as hostage, which is a very brave act.
The entire House joined him in applauding the girl for the bravery displayed by her with Deputy Chairman P J Kurien observing, "The whole House is with the girl. This is exemplary sacrifice by her."
The girl, as per reports had volunteered to be kidnapped in order to save 10 kids from her school van at Simaluguri in Sibsagar district last week and later managed to escape the dense forests on Assam-Nagaland border where she was abandoned by them.
This was the only issue on which the House was in order.
