Naga Mothers Association (NMA), apex tribal women organisation in Nagaland today demanded that there must be strict accountability to ensure the state has good roads and connectivity in order to move ahead in all fronts.
Expressing concern over the dilapidated road conditions in the state, NMA president Abei-u Meru said "as mothers and women, bad roads have a lot of impact on our health and many lives have been lost due to health hazards especially in rural areas."
She was speaking at the colloquium on Road Connectivity organised by the state government.
Maintaining that bridges connect people to civilised areas, Meru, lamented that there are many places where there are no bridges built for the people and places where bridges have collapsed.
The responsibility must be borne by the department that is supposed to be looking after roads and bridges, the NMA president said while asking that engineers concern must regularly travel instead of sitting in the office while the contractors must honestly give their best when doing any road and bridges work.
She demanded that "the nexus between department and contractors making profit from public roads must stop."
The NMA president also demanded that there must be strict accountability to ensure the state has good roads and connectivity in order to move ahead in all fronts.
As per records presented, the total length of roads in Nagaland is 13,626.48 km, which comprises of 12,079.80 km under PWD Roads and Bridges and 1546.68 km under PWD National highways.
