Former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed is here to meet the top Indian leadership, nearly a month ahead of the Presidential elections in his country.
"He is visiting India to meet the Indian leadership. He is likely to meet briefly with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party spokesperson told PTI.
He said the party was in constant touch with India.
Asked what are the issues likely to be discussed during the visit, he said, "We are navigating a very tense election slated for September 7."
Nasheed met External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today. He tweeted that he will be meeting Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
Nasheed was ousted from power in February last year and the country has seen a lot of political twists and turns since then.
India has stressed that the Presidential elections should be free and fair and has reached out to all Maldivian political parties.
Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who ruled the Maldives for 30 years before losing out to Nasheed in the country's first democratic elections in 2008, visited New Delhi in early June and met Prime Minister Singh.
President Mohammed Waheed too had visited India after taking over from Nasheed.
India has been helping the Maldives strengthen key institutions, including its election commission.
