A 50-year-old farmer has been sitting on a 200 feet power grid from last 24 hours in Sikar district demanding a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for his ravaged rabi crop in recently held rains-hailstorm disaster, the police said.
Though the power supply through tower of National Power Grid Corporation (NPGC) was shut down after the aggrieved farmer Gopal Choudhary climbed on the tower erected on his farmland at Dinapur, 10 kms from Sikar district, yesterday, the Superintendent of Police Dr Ravi told PTI on telephone.
Despite the constants appeals by the district administration, senior policemen and NPGC officials the farmer has not come down since yesterday and adamant that the state government should pay him Rs 20 lakh for crop losses as relief and compensation, the SP said.
NPGC had already paid Rs 75000 earlier to the farmer for crop damage, and again the grid corporation officials holding a cheque of Rs 1.85 lakh to deliver to him, the SP said, adding the farmer reiterating for Rs 20 lakh from the state government as crop compensation.
Farmer has been living with his family members in the house built in the farmland, the SP said.
Not only passersby but the entire district civil and police officers have been convincing him (farmer) to get down and settle his demand on the ground, he said.
Gopal climbed up the tower when the NPGC shut down the supply of electricity for maintenance yesterday, and after seeing him on the tower, the engineers did not run power supply. This incidence has caused power cut in adjoining areas too.
