Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today said the agriculture sector played the most important role in the country and for his government the interest of farmers was paramount.
"Better work in the field of agriculture will bring in changes in the state and make people happy as it is the most important area.
"The state government is running many schemes in the interest of agriculture and farmers," Yadav said addressing the valedictory session of the Sixth National Seed Congress here.
The three-day event saw more than 400 agricultural scientists, experts and officials discussing ways and means to increase agricultural production by providing quality seeds to farmers and improving their economic condition.
The SP government was ensuring that quality seeds were available to farmers and they didn't face any difficulty in procuring fertiliser and water for irrigation, he said.
"The government is also giving priority to soil testing of agricultural land to increase productivity," he said, adding it was necessary to provide accurate and useful information to farmers.
Stressing the need for research to develop better-quality seeds and technique for effective control of diseases in crops, the Chief Minister said farmers would adopt new technique and research only when they were convinced that it would prove beneficial to them.
