A 40-year-old man allegedly committed suicide at Babhulgaon Khalasa village as he was apparently troubled due to the continual harrasment of his minor daughter by a youth, police said today.
The victim, Popat Maruti Purane, was found dead at his farm in Karjat tehsil yesterday. He had killed himself on Tuesday night by consuming poison, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sudershan Munde said.
He was upset over the constant harassment of his daughter by Ketan Bhausaheb Ladhane (20) against whom he had twice filed a complaint in Mirajgaon police station but later withdrew it under pressure from his peers as the youth was a distant relative.
It is alleged that Ladhane used to often tease, stalk the girl and make sexual advances towards her.
The latest complaint was lodged on August 21 and was subsequently withdrawn when Ketan along with his friend Balu Mohan Bhalera had allegedly barged into Popat's house and threatened the girl, police said.
As the harassment continued even after the incident Popat turned reclusive and decided to end his life, the girl's brother alleged.
Police have registered a case against Ketan and his friend who are on the run.
Meanwhile, local NGOs met the victim's family and have demanded an thorough probe into the matter.
