Fifteen persons were arrested in and around the city, for allegedly trying to sell liquor illegally, despite a Tamil Nadu government order to shut all state-run retail liquor outlets as a mark of respect to late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, police said.
Twelve persons were arrested from places like Peelamedu, R S Puram and Kuniamuthur late last night and this morning, and a little over 400 bottles of liquor were seized from them, police said.
Three persons were apprehended in rural limits and nearly 50 bottles seized from their possession, they said.
The Prohibition and Excise Department had yesterday said in a communication that all shops of the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) and bars throughout the state be closed on December 6,7 and 8 "as a mark of respect to late Selvi J Jayalalithaa."
It had also directed that other licenced premises selling liquor should also remain closed during the period.
