Film on first test-tube baby creator's death

A new documentary on the birth of the world's second and India's first test-tube baby performed by Kolkata-based Dr Subhash Mukherjee, was today screened on the scientist's death anniversary today.
The film delves into the controversy surrounding Dr Mukherjee's feat, which had led the scientist to commit suicide.
Directed by social activist Rajib Sarkar, the documentary "Blood stains never fade" was produced by "India's Smile".
It was a sequel to "Effect of Indian Crab Syndrome" which was screened last year at the Kolkata International Film Festival.
The director said that 35 years ago the scientist had committed suicide after his stellar achievement was rejected, but now he had been recognised as a genius ahead of his time.

Baby Durga was born on October 3, 1978 in Kolkata and the film recorded interviews with the scientist's colleagues and friends who had worked with him.

The documentary quoted the state's former health minister and CPI-M leader Dr Surjya Kanta Mishra as saying that scientists of his time could not understand the importance of his work.
"I do not believe that somebody conspired against him. It happened due to their ignorance," he said.
Dr Mukherjee has also been the subject of eminent director Tapan Sinha's Hindi film 'Ek Doctor Ki Maut' (Death of a doctor).
