Fin Min considering proposal to enhance MPLADS funds

A proposal to enhance the funds given to MPs for carrying out development projects in their constituencies under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) is under the consideration of the Finance Ministry, Lok Sabha was informed today.
"Discussions have been going on for last 3-4 years. The proposal is with the Finance Ministry. We will inform all MPs once a decision is taken," Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation V K Singh said during Question Hour while replying a question on the proposal to enhance the MPLADS.
Under the scheme, each MP has the choice of suggesting to the District Collector works to the tune of Rs 5 crore per annum to be taken up in his or her constituency.

The Rajya Sabha members can recommend works in one or more districts in the State from where they have been elected. The nominated members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha may select any districts from any state in the country for implementation of their choice of work under the scheme.
The Member of Parliament Local Area Development Division, which is entrusted with the responsibility of implementation of MPLADS, has issued guidelines on the scheme's concept, implementation and monitoring.
The progress of the works being implemented under the scheme is monitored on a regular basis. Under MPLADS, the role of the MPs is limited only upto recommendation of works. Thereafter, it is the responsibility of the District Authority to sanction, execute and complete the works recommended by Members of Parliament within the stipulated time.
