The Centre today told the Madras High Court that the consultative process with regard to providing relevant scheme for crop insurance to farmers will be over and a finality is expected within two weeks.
A submission to this effect was made before the First Bench by counsel for the union government when a PIL seeking a direction to authorities to make the crop insurance scheme available to all agriculturists covering all crops in Tamil Nadu, came up.
Earlier, the court had directed the Assistant Solicitor General Su. Srinivasan to file an affidavit stating when the central government expects the consultative process of providing relevant scheme for crop insurance will get its finality as it was going on for the last three years.
In his PIL, former DMK MLA Appavu has sought a direction to the authorities to make the crop insurance scheme available to all agriculturists, covering all crops in Tamil Nadu.
As per the existing scheme, farmers in notified areas alone, that too those who cultivate the notified crops only, were eligible to become a beneficiary in case of loss.
The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana after recording the submission of the counsel for the union government, posted the matter for directions to November 6.
