Project representative Brogan Campbell said today that the fire, which broke out in the early hours of September 12 at a Turkish shipyard, only damaged the ship's newly fitted portions, leaving the vessel's historical elements intact.
The damage will not derail the restoration of the ship, a global symbol of environmental protection, she said.
Cousteau transformed the Calypso, a former Royal Navy minesweeper, into an oceanographic vessel for his pioneering expeditions.
The ship supported the filming of the Oscar-winning 'The Silent World' documentary, which brought images of the sea bed to millions of viewers.
