Fit Speed Governors in all school, college buses

: Educational institutions transporting students in the Union Territory will henceforth have to get speed governors fitted and adhere to certain standards, as per a notification.
Additional Secretary to Transport Department, S D Sundaresan said in a notification that the conditions had been evolved in consonance with guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court.
"These are in addition to those already attached to permits granted to private service vehicles for educational institutions", he said.
Institutions plying under private service vehicle permits should be painted yellow and have 'School bus/college bus' labels on the front and rear sides of the vehicles.

The buses should have speed governors fitted with a pre set speed of 45 kms per hour, it said, adding all buses should have emergency exits.
A special Parent Teacher Association should be formed and Heads of institutions should consider suggestions or representations the association submits on operation and maintenance of buses and safety measures in the vehicles, it said.
