The accident occurred at Bhatra village, 8 km from Bishnupur, at around 2 pm, Superintendent of Police Nilakanta Sudhir said.
The SUV, carrying 11 passengers, was heading to Radhanagar from Bishnupur when it was hit by the empty dumper coming from the opposite direction, the SP said.
Five persons died on the spot. They included three members of a family -- Chanchal Ghosh (45), his wife, Shibani Ghosh (30) and daughter Reba Ghosh (6). The other victims were a woman Soma Sarkhel (30) and the driver of the SUV Ananda Mondal (25).
The driver of the dumper was absconding, the SP said adding that the vehicle had been seized.
